Mike Casey, a licensed plumbing contractor and co-author of Code Check Plumbing, responds: Most dishwashers come from the factory with a 6-foot 6-inch drain hose, and nearly all manufacturers allow this hose to be extended to a maximum total length of between 10 and 12 feet.
Ideally you should extend the plumbing to the appliance, for both water supply and drain waste. But if absolutely necessary you can extend your waste drain hose to a maximum of three (3) metres, providing the use of the correct bore size, type, and quality of hose, and suitable joining pieces are employed.
How long can a drain line be?
Building codes, plumbing codes and not being able to cut through floor joist in the top and bottom 2 of joist, the pipe generally leaves only 4” to run horizontally and drop at a rate of ¼” per foot of horizontal travel. Therefore, drain line can only run 16 feet before dropping into the ceiling.
What do you do if your dishwasher drain hose is too long?
Measure the desired length of the drain hose. Measure the distance from the dishwasher to the point where the drain hose will connect to the drain pipe or garbage disposal. Cut the drain hose to the desired length. Use a sharp knife or scissors to carefully cut the drain hose to the measured leng.

Why does dishwasher drain hose need a high loop?
Without a high loop, dirty water from the sink can collect into the drainline and even back up into the dishwasher. This can cause odors and allow waste water from the sink to enter into the dishwasher.
Splicing Plastic Dishwasher Pipe: Family Handyman recommends using mission couplings and plastic couplings to splice drain pipes and says these can work on cast iron, ABS and PVC. Mark your cutting points on the old pipes, making them 1/2 inch larger than the replacement pipe.
Can you extend a drain hose?
Lengthening the drain hose isn’t difficult, because you can buy a drain hose extension that simply clamps onto the end of your existing hose. If you can’t find one, it isn’t difficult to replace the existing hose with a longer one.
Can you run a drain horizontally?
There is no problem with running your vent pipes horizontally as long as you remember that there should be a minimum clearance of 6 inches above the spill line. What is a spill line? This is the level where the water starts to overflow from the rim of the sink, toilet, or tub.
Can you have a 90 degree bend in a waste pipe?
Not good practice. Personally, I would avoid putting 90degree bends on a sewage disposal system. However, If you really have no alternative, and you have a good substantial fall, you may get away from possible blockages.
Can waste pipe turn 90 degrees?
If you have to make a 90-degree bend, use two 45-degree fittings and put a small piece of straight pipe between the fittings, if possible. It’s fine to have a larger-radius (sweep) 90-degree bend at the base of a vertical drainage stack where the wastewater starts to travel horizontally.
